iPhone fanatics

By John Allan
Apple Macintosh computers, with their stable of highly desirable ‘life-style’ products have an unquestionably brilliant knack at taking an already practised technology and making it oh, so much better! Since the late 1990s they have had a near blemish free run at un complicating systems used to solve consumer needs and packaging them in the most attractive casing. Their new iPhone , which released this month in the UK, certainly doesn’t deviate from Apple’s talents.

The name iPhone is actually, in it’s essence, misleading because it is so much more. Yes, you can make phone calls on it and it has many similar features available on other mobile phone handsets, but it’s the quality of these features that make the iPhone more of an I-can-be-your-life type accessory… sorry, necessity.

The phone’s system is comprised of Apple’s ‘widgets’, which is a term used for a number of utilities that come as-standard on the ‘Mac’ computers operating system, OS X. Items (widgets) like web browser, address book, diary, email, maps, music, photos YouTube (yes, YouTube) and video can be accessed on the phone via the touch-screen interface, as phone calls are too.

Where as with many mobile phones the internet access can be difficult, with sites either not formatted or fully supportive of access by mobile technology, the Safari web browser on the iPhone can access the internet like any personal computer with the ability to zoom in to see close ups on the hand held screen. The iPhone will even hook onto wifi hotspots to access the net, as opposed to being charged through your phone bill.

It seems to be the next progression in laptop computer technology, but it must not be forgotten that the iPhone is not a super-small personal computer, it’s still really a product for making phone calls but with these perfected extra features that complement your computer life. At the moment, the iPhone only has a 8GB memory, so there is obviously work to be done to increase this, but rest assured, Apple will not rest until their products are perfected.

Ever since the introduction of the iMac in 1998, with it’s now iconic look of smooth organic shaped exterior casing and subtly side highlighted colour panels, Apple have lead the field in product design.

They have also produced the most user-friendly operating system that makes Microsoft Windows look illogical, thus creating a huge gulf between the Mac user and the PC user. With the release of the revolutionary iPod MP3 player in 2001 again with an innovative and ground-breaking design that has since been updated countless times, Apple have managed to claw new found support from the other side of the divide.

So to any PC users who are thinking of making the switch… put the iPhone down on your Christmas list and you’ll soon be wondering what you did in the days before you had one!
