Samant Chauhan - Up coming New Indian Designer |
| |
| |

 |
Samant Chauhan, who comes from a small town in Bihar, had always aspired to the world of glamour. Though he got into the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, he preferred to head to Delhi for a place at NIFT.
NIFT offered him good placement, but he couldn't take things easy. A lot of hard work was involved considering the cut-throat competition involved. Coming from a completely non-fashion background, a son of an employee in the Indian railways, he had to start from scratch. "I slogged. I did projects for export and fashion houses to make a living.", says Chauhan.

His time in Delhi, first as a PG student of knitwear design and technology at NIFT, and then as a designer on his own, has turned him into a czar of cool. His breakthrough came when NIFT selected his collection for the Singapore Fashion Week. There, Chauhan won the first runner-up award at the Asian Young Designer Contest. That gave him prize money of US $5,000 that he could use as a financial base to achieve his ambition: his own label.

The award also got him the opportunity to participate in the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week, because the FDCI offered him a honorary three-year membership. He is now a renowned fashion designer best known for his creative genius creations that make a strong statement themselves. He loves working with natural fibers and describes his personal style as ''utopian street-wear''. Textures are created with the use of unusual silk yarns, with the embellishments kept to minimal.
His collection Kamasutra, showcased at WIFW, was one of the best seen on the runway at the indian fashion week and now he is showcasing an extended version of the same at the London Fashion week Fall collection.

Chauhan has created western street wear with Bhagalpuri raw silk. He has used lots of texturing, interlacing and knits to create a layered look. Along with digital print, the colour palette incorporated mostly pastel. |

Over the years, the handloom industry in Bhagalur, India, has been dying and being slowly replaced by power looms. With no patrons and no one coming forward to save this craft, Samant Chauhan took up the challenge to contemporise traditional Bhagalpur silk and reach it to the global audience.
From giving the weave design to the handloom weavers to deciding the final silhouette, everything is done keeping in mind the international audience. The Spring – Summer 08 collection at London, consisted of hand-woven and knitted 100 percent raw silk, linen and cotton linen blends – using all eco-friendly dyes and processes. His brand name is at par with the best in the industry and the same is now being retailed in stores in Moscow, London, and Singapore.

Samant Chauhan's unusual and contemporary creations have already created a name for him that any other designer would only dream of. What Chauhan has done to the fashion industry and the mind-set can only describe him as a genius of sorts. His style and sensibility is something that most indian designers may perhaps never comprehend. His knitware work is obvious in its ingenuity. This man is clearly a visionary and one step ahead of the crowd in terms of his designs. Inspired by the Asian pulse of fashion, he bridges the gap between East and West: fusing two typically opposing paradigms to create one very unique look.
Having set such a great example of the indian fashion in the international market, he is now becoming a nightmare to all the top designers of the country. " Its only the beginning", says Samant chauhan in his ever- so-humble tone, when questioned on where and how he has learnt such brilliant artistry and styling.

After the fame he has won himself in just four years of being in the industry, it is only an understatement to say that from here on, the only way for Samant Chauhan is UP! |
